At BAE Vineyards, we believe that the location of a vineyard plays a crucial role in determining the wine quality. The site characteristics, proximity to the ocean, and the combination of climate, soil, and topography—collectively known as terroir—define the quality of the grapes and, ultimately, the wine.
Weather is a key factor in winemaking. Grapes thrive in regions with moderate weather conditions that promote slow ripening over the growing season. This slow maturation phase is vital as it helps the grapes develop the right balance of sugar, acidity, and flavor, which ultimately impacts the wine quality.
Cool climate regions such as Burgundy in France or the Mosel Valley in Germany are known for producing wines with bold yet subtle flavors and high acidity. These regions are ideal for varieties like Pinot Noir or Riesling, which are perfectly suited for cooler weather. On the other hand, warmer regions such as Napa Valley in California or Languedoc in southern France produce wines with dominant fruit flavors, showcasing the versatility of climate in wine making.
The Vineyard
Maintaining a vineyard is a labor-intensive process that requires dedication and time. The initial years are spent guiding tendrils as they climb and ensuring that the roots are protected and properly nourished. This careful nurturing continues for about 3 to 5 years before the first harvest of grapes is ready.
